The post that's long overdue

I am not even sure where the idea that I wanted to cloth diaper came from but when I was pregnant I posted a facebook status saying I was interested and it exploded with a half a dozen friends who were cloth diapering their little ones. I had no clue so many of my friends used cloth diapers. Dan seemed to be onboard but then again I didn't really give him much of a choice. I think deep down I knew that cloth diapering would not only save us money but that it was so much better for the environment too. Over the last few months I've learned that there are so many more benefits to cloth diapering.

I did some minimal research with the help of my friends. I say minimal because once I actually started cloth diapering I learned so much more. I decided on FuzziBunz because they are a pocket diaper (more on that in a second) and they are adjustable meaning you can change the size of the diaper as baby grows.  These diapers will take Isaac into his toddler years.

I mentioned before that FuzziBunz are a pocket diaper. This means there is an insert that stuffs onto to the inside of the diaper. When you change the diaper you pull the insert out of the diaper and place the diaper and the insert into a diaper pail. We use a large garbage pail and a reusable diaper pail liner. We have two liners for easy swapping when needing to do laundry.

But what about poop?  Well, realistically you don't really need to spray or wash off the poop at first. I know this to be true of breastfed babies and I believe it is the same for formula fed babies. You can actually throw the dirty poopy diaper in the pail and it comes off in the washer. Once baby starts eating more than just breast milk or formula then you need to spray or dunk the diaper. This is because the babies poop is more solid. Well, Dan would never allow me to just throw a poopy diaper in the pail. So we've alway sprayed them off.  We put a sprayer that attaches to the toilet on our registry and lucky for us it was something we got as a gift.  This thing is awesome and it sure beats dunking my hand in the toilet.

Not my toilet

We have about 30 some diapers (I don't know the exact amount) which means we wash them about twice a week (it was more when I was on maternity leave because as a newborn he was needing to be changed more frequently). It really doesn't add to much extra time. At most it takes me an hour to wash, dry and prep the diapers (stuff them). I throw them in the washer and press a few buttons and go about my day. Eventually I have to transfer them to the dryer but seriously the washing/drying part take a few minutes out of my day. I usually wait until Isaac goes to sleep then watch TV or a movie while I stuff them.

We still use disposables at night. We did try a few times to use the cloth diapers but because Isaac can sleep for 10-12 hours overnight we had to really stuff the diaper with lots of inserts (to prevent leaks) and it caused the diaper to be really bulky and looked so uncomfortable. We generally will also use disposables when we go to my parents house for the weekend. Although, I am thinking about trying to cloth diaper the next time. We spent a day at Dan's parents a few about a month ago and clothed the whole time. It worked well.

I love love love cloth diapering. It's so easy! The diapers are super cute with lots of bold colors. The best part is I never have to run to the store when we run out of diapers. The first time we went my parents my mom said she'd pick up a pack of disposables to use for the weekend. Well... she forgot.  My dad and I went to three different stores at 9pm (when all I wanted to do was spend time with my family and eat dinner) to get some diapers. The first two store were closed. We finally found a third store (24 hour grocery store) and were able to get a pack.

There is so much more I can say. So over the next few weeks I will talk more about cloth diapering. I will try to touch on how we struggled with cloth diapering at first (cloth diapering a tiny preemie = hard), the benefits to cloth diapering, the different kinds of cloth diapers, how we wash them and how cloth diapering at daycare works. I could seriously talk about this forever!

Here are a few photos of Isaac in his fluff (a term used for cloth diapers). I just love his fluffy butt!

Loungin' around

It's seriously hard work to be this cute!
